Sussex Community Development Association (SCDA) runs a range of projects aimed at supporting the involvement of the whole of the community. The Employability work stream is one of our most established areas with over fifteen years’ experience in the Welfare to Work market. SCDA are proud to be delivering the Get Socially Active project which incorporates the development of a social enterprise bike workshop called Recycle and this new role, encouraging and supporting participants to gain new skills in food-related activity e.g.catering.

Community Connector – Food – Get Socially Active project
Salary range – £21,748 – £24,492 per annum pro rata dependent on skills & experience
22.5 hours per week. Based in Newhaven,
Fixed term until March 2023 in the first instance.

This is a great opportunity to join SCDA’s Employability team working on the Get Socially Active Project based in Newhaven. This is an innovative project which supports participants to find work, volunteering and community based opportunities.

Reporting to the Senior Service Manager, this role will be stand alone, delivering a range of work and learning related services to participants which focuses on food-related activity. You will assist in enabling them to access suitable work, learning or volunteering opportunities. The main aspects of the role are:

  • Assessing individual needs and providing information, guidance and support to achieve learning goals
  • Delivering a range of work and learning related services (group and one to one work)
  • Working in partnership with a broad range of service providers
  • Work with local organisations to receive referrals for new eligible participants
  • Identify strengths and areas for development of the participant
  • Working alongside colleagues in the GSA Recycle Employment Navigator and Bike Technician in sharing knowledge and network, and identifying suitable participants for working across both GSA Recycle and Food.

Previous experience of providing advice and guidance to people facing barriers to work and learning is expected, whilst working to agreed performance targets, as is experience in the food industry or relevant training e.g. Cookery Leader. The post requires excellent IT and admin skills e.g. accurate maintenance of participant files and databases for audit and funding purposes, as well as empathy, flexibility and the ability to monitor ongoing participant progress towards desired goals.

The role is based in Newhaven with some travel to outreach and other delivery locations across the Lewes District, therefore being a car owner / driver is preferred. The post is subject to a DBS check.

Covid-19 conditions
Due to following current government guidance on social distancing, we are implementing Covid-safe conditions in the work place and are working towards bringing our teams back into the office at an appropriate level. Interviews for this role will take place in person with appropriate social distancing measures. The successful applicant will be supported and equipped to work from home and in the office for some working days each week.
