The Kanji Project

Eastbourne and Brighton

Are you passionate about education? Are you interested in supporting disadvantaged children and communities? Do you have an interest in southern India, and ideas about how to raise funds for a small, volunteer-led charity that is looking for help? The Kanji Project is looking for a dedicated volunteer fundraiser who can help our small team of friendly trustees to raise our regular income, so that we can continue to support our sister charities in Tamil Nadu, India.

The Kanji Project is a volunteer-led charity based in Eastbourne/Brighton and the surrounding areas. Working with our Indian partners, we support St Antony’s School and Shanthi Lumin girls’ home, both administered by our sister Indian charity St Antony’s Foundlings. We also support the work of the Rose Sisters (Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary), who run a school for disabled children and who also work with various vulnerable communities and children’s groups in the villages surrounding Kanji.

Having worked in the area for over 25 years, TKP has seen our Indian partners grow from strength to strength. St Antony’s School numbers have risen from just a few dozen students in 1993 to 1,700 today. Shanthi Lumin is home to around 40 orphaned or destitute girls, supporting their schooling and development. The Rose Sisters administer children’s parliaments in over 20 villages around Kanji, support 16 disabled children at the Sunshine School, and work with women’s groups and disabled adults to make sure that they can access relevant government schemes. Both organisations also engage in humanitarian support, providing aid to some of the worst-affected areas in southern Tamil Nadu, in the aftermath of Cyclone Gaja in 2018, and reaching over 800 families with food deliveries in the current COVID-19 crisis.

However, due to current circumstances, it is becoming increasingly difficult to raise the funds necessary to support this important work with our partners in India. Like many small charities at this time, we are looking for new ways to increase our fundraising ability. We are looking for an experienced fundraiser who can support us to replenish some of our regular and one-off income.

The Role

The individual who takes this role will be responsible for developing a medium- to long-term fundraising strategy for the charity that will allow us to close our budget deficit. Building upon some of the groundwork already done by the trustee team, this person will help us to grow our income through:

  • Increased outreach to new audiences for regular and one-off donations
  • Applications for relevant grants and trusts
  • Organisation of fundraising events
  • Development of a new fundraising strategy that can be implemented by the trustee team

As this is a volunteer-led charity, this position is also voluntary. We would be very interested and keen to work with someone who has experience of raising funds for smaller charities to improve our capacity to bring in income for our Indian partners.

The fundraising position can be filled by somebody who would also like to become a trustee of the charity, or it can be a more focused position that will work closely with a small group of trustees to lead a new fundraising strategy. Trustees usually meet once every six weeks (currently virtually).

If this is of interest, please do contact us at rod@thekanjiproject.org.uk.
