Maria’s story

In the photo:

This is Maria wearing scrubs on the Inpatient Unit. Deep in concentration, she is probably looking to fix an issue with the rota or help with something that needs her attention.

What did your volunteer do?

Maria has volunteered at St Wilfrid’s Hospice for 15 years. For the last 11 on the Inpatient Unit, working closely with the Clinical Administrator, Co-ordinator, and Ward Manager.

During lockdown Maria never missed a shift, in fact, came in almost every day, including weekends to help where she could. When the Administrator was taken ill with Covid, Maria did even more to ensure administrative duties were maintained.

She has supported patients compassionately during times of need and spreads positivity to the clinical staff and colleagues throughout the Hospice.

How did your volunteer make a difference?

Maria has made a difference to the lives of staff, fellow volunteers, patients, and visitors alike. Nothing is ever too much trouble.

Maria has been known to stay overnight, when there has been travel difficulties due to snow, so that she can be on duty the next day. She attends all the fundraising events possible and promotes the Hospice and its values at every opportunity.

Maria is very self-effacing and considers it a privilege to volunteer at St Wilfrid’s. Maria is dependable, reliable, caring, positive and hard working. She has more energy than anyone we know.
