Paula Reed, Beaver Scout Leader at 2nd Willingdon Scout Group, has gone above and beyond to ensure the children in her group have been able to continue enjoying scouting throughout the lockdowns.
What did your volunteer do?
Paula, despite having a busy job working for the NHS at Eastbourne Hospital, has gone the extra mile to ensure the children in her Beaver Scout Group have had activities to enjoy throughout lockdown.
Meetings were held every week on zoom. Paula dropped exciting activity packs to each child so they could enjoy a range of things, such as baking, craft projects, science experiments, virtual rock pooling and virtual Remembrance Day parade. She made sure all children had the opportunity to take part.
Some of the children in her care earned their (Bear Grylls) Chief Scout Bronze Award – the highest award a Beaver can earn, despite being in lockdown.
How did your volunteer make a difference?
The effort that Paula put in made a huge difference to the children in her group.
Many parents have said that during a time when most clubs were cancelled, and trips out weren’t allowed, Beavers was something their child looked forward to every week. It gave them fun, interesting activities. It also provided social interaction with their peers.
Paula encouraged them to continue earning their badges, challenging themselves and she congratulated each of them for their efforts.
