Sewing Crow-Bees made over 300 sets of scrubs & scrub bags for Aspens in January and February 2021 in response to a call for help. In the photo, Karon Hodges & Alison Cousins are dropping off the first delivery on behalf of the group.
What did your volunteers do?
We began in March 2020 when Maisie Jones & Alison Cousins ‘met’ on Facebook and started making face masks and giving them to carers, volunteers, and groups in need in the call for PPE due to the pandemic. Unable to keep up with demand, a call for help brought forth other ladies with sewing machines in Crowborough.
Not knowing each other previously, working as one, sewing literally thousands of masks – handing them out and raising money for charity via donations for items that were produced.
Items are made using donated fabrics and haberdashery, the group is self-funded, only recently setting up a GoFundMe to help with essential purchases.
How did your volunteers make a difference?
In the 12 months that we have existed, we have raised: over £15,000 for Friends of Crowborough Hospital, over £2,000 for The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, over £1,500 for NHS Charities Together and around £70 for a couple of other local charities.
We have produced, and given away, hundreds of items for Know Dementia (twiddle mits, twiddle mats, aprons, craft bags and bags for walking frames).
We have made over 60 special ‘bags’ for primary school children to hang on the backs of their chairs for their books and crayons etc which they had to keep for their own use only due to the Covid precautions.
